Household upkeep during the Fall

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

As the Fall season begins to wrap up, you’re more than likely enveloped in your list of things to-do for your business but let’s not forget about the #1 protector that's kept you and your family safe this past year - your home!

It’s easy for our home's upkeep to get put on the backburner as we move through the busyness of our days throughout the year but the soft chills of Fall can be a great reminder to give your home the TLC it deserves!

So before you breakout the good china for your Thanksgiving Table or crawl into the attic to pull out your Christmas lights, read on to learn some of the key things you can do this Fall to keep up your home and prepare it to help you enjoy the holiday season!

Clean Your Gutters

When’s the last time you cleaned out your gutters? With most roof drainage systems diverting thousands of gallons of water on average - we think it’s time to take a look up there! Who knows what the storms may have brought in.

Take an afternoon to check/clean your gutters so that they don’t become clogged. Clogged gutters can damage your exterior surfaces and even lead to water in your basement (which is not something you want during the winter season...or ever!) Clogged gutters can also lead to rust and corrosion so show your home some love this season by cleaning them out and using mesh gutter guards to help keep debris from coming back.

Protect Your Pipes

If you’re anticipating some cold weather this season, take a moment to protect your pipes from freezing and/or bursting this holiday season! You’ll want to spend some time shutting off any valves that take care of outside faucets and then opening the outside faucet so that you can help drain any left over water.

If your faucet’s aren’t freeze-proof, we promise you’ll be thanking us for this reminder later!

Plug Up Air Leaks

Letting in the cool Fall air can be a welcomed breeze in your home as you cozy up to the season but it can also be a nuisance if you’re still feeling the chill even after you close your windows!

So before the air gets any colder, take a look around your home to pinpoint any doors and windows that contain air leaks so that you know where they need to be plugged up.

Your family will thank you and so will your household expenses! Just by taking care of any drafts within your home, you can save up to 20% on your electricity bill!

Fall Cleaning

Once you’ve taken care of the bigger things, reroute your attention to the easier things! Fall cleanings are just as good as the Spring so pump up the jams and break out your cleaning gloves to make your home sparkly clean! Make some boxes for giveaway and pile in any clothes your family is ready to get rid of in addition to any toys that are no longer getting played with.

This will help to make some space for all the new incoming things from the holiday season.

Finally, a good Fall cleaning can not only make you feel much more confident for any holiday parties you’re planning on having but it can even increase your business motivation simply by having a clearer place to work in.

Remember, by attending to your household upkeep now, you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday season worry free!
