Want glowing skin this year? Our best advice on starting a new skincare routine.

As we make our way into 2024, it’s the perfect time for a fresh beginning and the opportunity to renew and refresh our habits from last year. And what better way to start off with a clean slate than by revamping your skincare routine for glowing glass skin?

With so many products on the market and information easily accessible (some true, some not), changing up your current skincare routine can feel just as overwhelming as that chore you’ve been putting off since last year. You know the one you said you were going to get done in 2023 but still haven’t gotten to yet?

But as a company that works with professionals in the health and beauty industry, we’ve learned a thing or two about self-care and what it takes to create an effective skincare routine. Today, we’re sharing the actionable steps you can take to transform your skin and skincare routine for the new year.

Assess what you’re doing now

Before you fill your Amazon cart with new skincare products, take a moment to evaluate your current routine. Take a moment to identify what’s working, what’s not, and where there’s room for improvement.

This is the ideal time to identify your skin type—whether it’s oily, dry, combination, sensitive, or acne-prone—so you can choose the right products for you. Working with products that aren’t tailored to fit your unique skin care needs will be counterproductive, so this step is crucial.

Do the research

With so much information out there, it can be difficult to narrow down what’s accurate. But remember, what works for one person won’t necessarily work for you.

Be sure to research product ingredients, understand the why behind them, and learn about what your skin type needs to look its very best.

Simplify your routine

What we’ve found from experience is that it’s much easier to follow through with consistency when you have a simplified skincare routine. And while a multi-step routine is key to addressing all of your skin’s needs, it doesn’t need to be complicated.

Start with the must-have routine steps: cleanse, tone, moisturize, and SPF. Then, you can gradually work in serums, exfoliants, and masks to achieve your ultimate skin goals.

Slowly introduce new products

We always recommend patch-testing new products on a small, discrete area before applying them to your entire face. This is a safeguard technique to avoid any adverse reactions if the product isn’t a good fit for you.

If you’re looking to overhaul your entire skincare product suite, it’s critical to introduce products slowly. This way, it will be difficult to easily identify what products are working and which ones you need to stay away from, if any.

At Ekwani Consulting, we strongly believe in the power of clean beauty and avoiding toxic products at all costs. One of our favorite skincare brands happens to be Murad. They offer a line for skin of every type, but remember to do your research first!

Slather on the SPF

Even though you're starting this new routine in the winter, SPF is still an absolute skincare staple. Regardless of the season, sunscreen is always non-negotiable for skin protection and prevention of premature aging and skin damage.

Make it a habit to apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 as the final step of your daily routine!

Be patient (we know it’s hard!)

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is radiant skin. Many skin care products require a typical 30-day window before delivering the results you desire. If you’re in the early stages and feel like your new routine is a waste of time and product, just stick with it! Being consistent will pay off.

Listen to your skin

Your skin is unique and might react differently to various products despite what the products – and others who use them – promise.

As you introduce new products, pay close attention to how your skin responds. If you notice any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use and replace them with gentler products that will help you achieve the results you desire.

Healthy skin requires more than just products

While a skincare routine is essential for glowing skin, your whole-body well-being also plays a crucial role in skin health.

Here are a few daily habits to help promote healthy skin:

Stay hydrated by drinking roughly half of your body weight in ounces.

Recharge your body with 7-9 hours of nightly sleep.

Fuel your body with a balanced diet containing vitamins, minerals, and all of the necessary nutrients.

Manage stress levels by practicing self-care, movement, and meditation.

Reach out for professional help

If you are completely lost on where to start or aren’t seeing the results you want over time, seek guidance from a dermatologist or esthetician.

They will be your best resource for personalized recommendations based on your skin type, issues, and goals.

The road to your dream skin is a journey worth celebrating, so pop the champagne for yourself!

Embracing a new skincare routine for the new year is a commitment that takes dedication and an investment in your own self-love. Cheers to a radiant year ahead filled with healthy, glowing skin!
